Gold Ekes Out a Record; Silver Shines


Gold eked out a record after struggling in negative territory for most of the day, and silver climbed to a more than 30-year high, as positive economic sentiment shined differently on the two metals.
Investors held off on gold purchases as markets for stocks and other commodities rallied on the first trading day of 2011. Market participants said the optimism, powered by positive U.S. data, dulled gold's attraction as a safe-haven investment.
